How Does The Polygraph / Lie Detector test Work?

A polygraph / lie detector examination usually takes around 2 hours from beginning to end and consists of three different phases; pre-test interview, collection of charts, and analysis of charts.

The Polygraph charts are generated by attaching four components to the subject.

  • Pnuemograph - Two rubber pnuemograph tubes are placed around the subject's upper chest and abdomen; these record breathing and movement.
  • G.S.R - The GSR or galvanic skin response is traced by placing two fingerplates across the subject's ring and index finger of the right hand. These trace changes in skin resistance during the examination.
  • Cardiosphygmograph - This component traces changes in the subject's relative blood pressure and pulse rate, and is similar to the pressure cuff your doctor uses to take your blood pressure.

While the subject is attached to the equipment described above, they are asked agreed and carefully constructed questions, and in replying the body generates tracings on the polygraph charts. In analysing these tracings, the examiner reaches a conclusion to the subject's honesty regarding the issue.

How many questions can I ask in the test?

Question Formulation - I only carry out polygraph tests using the latest question techniques. These techniques are widely accepted in Law Enforcement throughout the USA, Canada and many other countries.

I work with the client to construct questions that cover the test issue as well as meeting the strict rules that ensure validity. The latest techniques allow a maximum of three relevant questions within a single issue test.

All questions are fully reviewed and agreed with the subject before the test commences. The test can only be completed with the examiner and subject present, no other person is permitted in the room at the time of the examination.

All questions must be direct and pertain directly to the issue under examination. Questions cannot be mixed in issue on a single test. I will also only ask questions that relate to actions, I cannot ask what a person thinks or feels but I can ask what they have done! For example:

Example of A good question:
Since the day you were married have you had sexual intercourse with any other woman than your wife?

Example of a bad question:
                          Do you love your wife?

How long will the test take to complete
?

A polygraph examination typically takes around 2 hours from beginning to end, and consists of three different phases; pre-test interview, collection of charts, and analysis of charts.

Pre-test interview - during the pre test interview the I will explain how the polygraph works. I will then discuss the specific issue, develop and review all the questions to be asked on the polygraph test. This stage is normally the longest to complete and can take anything from 45 to 90 minutes.

Collection of Charts- During this phase the subject will be attached to the polygraph. The set of questions, which was developed during the pre-test interview, will be asked several times. During this stage only the examiner and subject will be present.

Analysis of Charts- Once I have collected the charts I will analyse the results before giving a decision as to the subject's truthfulness or deception.

Can the polygraph test be beaten or cheated?

Provided the examiner conducting the test is trained and qualified it is highly improbable. The polygraph is a medical instrument that records changes in a persons condition whilst they answer questions. If a person engages in behaviors in order to distort the polygraph tracings, it becomes evident to a trained examiner. I use the latest polygraph instruments and techniques that include state of the art countermeasures equipment to assist us in catching people who are attempting to cheat the test.

I have conducted hundreds of tests and am an experts at what I do, for the person taking the test it will often be a once in a lifetime experience so the odds of fooling me are slim to say the least!

How much will a Polygraph / Lie Detector test cost me?

Remember when you employ a polygraph examiner you are purchasing his/her experience and knowledge, I am fully qualified and have years of experience.

How do I know that the examiner I choose is Qualified?

Quite simply you should ask to see evidence that the examiner is a member of the American Polygraph Association or the British Polygraph Association. If they are a member of either of these associations you can be sure that they will have attended and graduated from an accredited polygraph school. The examiner will be able to show you evidence of membership when you attend your examination.

Don't be afraid to ask where they qualified and what year they attended the training school. A qualified examiner will be happy to answer your questions directly and factually.  All UK Lie Tests are fully qualiifed and will be happy to verify this with you.

Where will the test take place?

cover the whole of the UK so traveling to you is no problem. In most cases we can test in your home or if your problem is a business issue we can test at your office. You only need to supply a quiet distraction free room for us to test in. During the test itself the examiner and person taking the test (subject) must have privacy, this enables us to ensure that the subject is focused on the test issue without distraction.

If you do not want the test at your location we can either arrange a meeting room local to you or you are welcome to attend our offices in Manchester.

Our fee's include all travel expenses to your location anywhere in England, Wales and Scotland, for tests outside Mainland UK we charge our basic flight/ferry costs. For an all inclusive quote please call 0161 334 0021

How reliable is the Polygraph / Lie Detector test?

The American Polygraph Association (APA) has gathered over 200 studies on the subject of test accuracy. You can view further details at the APA website

www.polygraph.org. Research results regarding polygraph testing vary depending on a number of factors some of which are laboratory study versus field study and inconclusive results being included or excluded. To help achieve a high accuracy rate the examiner you use should be a properly qualified individual using an accepted technique. Although no forensic testing of any kind can be guaranteed 100% accurate some research has suggested that qualified polygraph examiners are up to 98% accurate in their overall decisions (refer: Ansley, N 1990 The Validity and reliability of Polygraph examinations in real cases).
