I am one of the UK's small number of professionally trained examiners with over 1000 polygraph tests successfully completed. I am one of the official polygraph examiners on ITV's "Jeremy Kyle" TV show and I specialize in using the polygraph in testing relationship issues.

A polygraph is essentially a medical instrument that records changes in the physiology of the test subject (person taking the test). The instrument itself traces heart rate, Skin resistance and breathing rate whilst the subject sits still in a chair. The equipment itself sits on the outside of the subjects clothing as is totally non intrusive. All the questions on a polygraph test are carefully constructed by the examiner and reviewed with the subject before the test commences. 

Many people ask if nerves effect the results of a polygraph test and while it is true to say that anyone taking a test will experience nerves, this is true for both a truthful person as well as someone who is lying to the issue of the test and as such nerves will not interfere with the results (if they did then nobody would ever pass!).  

I am also commonly asked how easy is it to cheat a lie detector test, the truth is that it is extremely difficult. When a subject uses countermeasures they are deliberately placing unnatural stress onto areas of the physiology, however they must be do this without detection. Whilst it may be possible to learn this "skill" with many hours of dedicated training and practice on a polygraph, the latest polygraph instruments feature countermeasure detection features which are almost impossible to beat.
